BLACK RECEIVES HONORARY ELEMENTARY ED DEGREE

12.17.16 – (From Northwestern State University’s News Bureau) Northwestern State University bestowed an honorary degree in elementary education to Noella Lyons Black of New Orleans during fall commencement. Black left the school during World War II to fill in for male teachers from her home parish who enlisted to serve in the military. She married a Naval officer and left NSU just a few credits shy of her degree. Nearly 30 members of the Black family attended the ceremony for their matriarch, who will celebrate her 94th birthday on Christmas Day.

FORMER “NORMAL SCHOOL” STUDENT TO RECEIVE DEGREE

12.10.16 – Northwestern State University will award an honorary bachelor of science degree in elementary education to Noella Lyons Black of New Orleans, a former student  who attended Louisiana State Normal College, as Northwestern was then known, in the 1940s and will celebrate her 94th birthday on Christmas Day. More than 25 members of the Black family will join her for the university’s December 16, 2016, fall commencement ceremonies, fulfilling a lifelong goal for the matriarch who left college just a few credits shy of graduation.  Read more.

NEW ED.D. PROGRAM LAUNCHES SPRING 2017

12.08.16 – At its December 2016 meeting, the Louisiana Board of Regents approved Northwestern’s application to offer the doctor of education (Ed.D.) in adult learning and development, beginning with the B-term of spring 2017.

The program’s inaugural concentration will be in community college leadership and focus on preparing current or prospective higher education professionals who are interested in expanding their career opportunities in community colleges.
